The last time you put on your John Legend CD, did you think to yourself, “Man this guy has an awesome voice?”
Not only does he have an amazing voice but he plays the piano, writes a lot of his own music and has won numerous awards including an AMA Award, Grammy’s, MTV awards and 5 Soul Train Music Awards.
Even if you are not an RnB, Hip Hop or pop music fan you must appreciate his talent. Recently John had another amazing hit with Ariana Grande from the movie Beauty and the Beast.
My experience Seeing John Legend Live
Have you had the opportunity to see John Legend live? If you have you will applicate this article. If you have not seen him live in concert then I hope I give you a reason to check him out one day if you can.
Many of John’s fan own his first album, Get Lifted. This is when I first became a fan. John Legend had an RnB feel with a twist of hip hop. It was something different.
A few years back John Legend preformed in Calgary, Alberta Canada. I believe this was his first time in Calgary. Good thing for me, my wife is a bigger fan than I am. There was no way she was going to let me miss the “All of Me” concert.
Live in Calgary
I’m not sure how good our seats were but I was stilling in Row K Seat 53 of the Jubilee auditorium. From where we sat the seats were fantastic but I will get back to that in a few paragraphs. First I want to tell you about the atmosphere.
You hear an announcement over the speakers saying, “Five minutes before John Legend is live on stage”. The atmosphere is very exciting. People are enjoying a glass of wine, beer or a few cocktails before the concert starts.
Once we heard the announcement my wife and I made our way to our seats. We wanted to make sure we did not miss the opening of show.
We feel the energy in the auditorium as the crowd waits for the lights to dim. A few moments pass and the lights go down and the crowd starts cheering.
To the stage walks three violinists, one cello player and one guitar player. The lights dim down even more. From the overhead lighting the spot light shines on the 5 musicians. They start the concert by playing very soft music that starts to set the mood for the evening.
After about three minutes or so the lights go out. The crowd starts to cheer again but this time louder than the first time the lights went out. This time the lights come on and John Legend is standing on stage. The crowd erupts and the whole building is now electric.
You can feel the energy as John understands how to create a buildup to start the show.
As John walks, over to the piano he has a seat. After 10 second, which felt like a minute, he starts to sing.
“I was sent here for you!
We were made to love, we were made to love!
You were sent for me too, we were made to love, we were made to love!”
Wow! What a powerful voice and lyrics to start the concert. People are cheering and the concert hall is about to explode from all the excitement. He starts the show with him most popular, current, song.
As you might expect from a professional musician, John Legend sings and plays piano for a little under two hours.
He goes through his music catalog one song at a time. He continues to play the piano and sings songs like, ‘Who Do We Think We Are’, ‘Used To Love U’, ‘Ordinary People’, ‘Let’s Get Lifted’, ‘Save Room’, ‘You & I’ and ‘All Of Me’ to name a few.
When John is not singing love songs, he decides to tell the crowd a little bit about his story.
John told people how he had a dream and was working at a desk work before his career took off. He mentioned how he used to play the 5:30pm show at the “Living Room” in New York City.
Even when the house was not packed he was happy to play to handful of people who would showed up.
As the night continued, John talked about his experience touring with music headliners like Usher and Kanye West. John would play piano for Kanye West and would get the opportunity to performance one song at each show.
John talked about the influence his grandmother had on him and his music. He talked about how he was on the Jimmy Fallon show and had the chance to perform his version of a Bruce Springsteen song.
One year later, Bruce Springsteen called up John and asked if he would sing at an event. John said yes it would be an honor. John also said, “When the Boss requests your presence, how can you say no?”
The “All of Me Tour” was amazing. It featured all his best songs. For those who did not attended that night, all I can say is get your tickets next time. You will not regret it and no John Legend did not pay me to say this statement.
The night was intimate and interactive just as you would expect from the artist and the venue. The emotion in his voice as he performed his music was love. Everyone related to his music that night.
It was amazing to see and hear the crowd singing, cheering, holding hand and each other as the singer does best.
If you do not listen to John Legend because you are not a fan of his music, all I can say he is one of the greatest voices of our generation and you should give his music a chance.
After the contest was over I thanked my wife for buying the tickets and asking me to be her date. This is a moment I will forever enjoy.
