Thought of the Day: May 4, 2018 – Goal Setting
It does not have to be December 31 for you to take some time for goal setting. To be a success today and for your future self, you will need to take some time to understand what it will take to achieve your dream live.
I am aware I am not the first person to tell you to set goals. I am sure you have heard this all through your life thus far. You parents, teachers, team coaches, spouse and even your boss have encouraged you to do some goal setting.
On January 1, many people set weight and diet goals. Why? Probably because they are expected to and that’s what their friends and family are doing. Not to mention it’s all over convention and social media.
Do you like to read?
If so you may have picked up a book on goal setting by Brian Tracy, Michael Singer Dobson, Gary Ryan Blair or Zig Ziglar on how to set goals.
Do you have a reason to set a goal? Your Why?
Whatever your reason, you must have a clear vision on WHY you want to accomplish your goal. I believe your goals should create value in your life and impact other people in a positive way.
Do you know What goals you want to set?
Are they small or big goals? Do your goals line up with your beliefs? What will you sacrifice to achieve your goals? What will your life look like after you accomplish your goal? How will you reward yourself for accomplishing the goal?
As soon as you begin your goal setting practice, you learn you need to have a vision to see your purpose become fulfilled.
I make a list of all the goals I want start and complete. I recommend you do the same. There are no limits or restriction on your goals. Write them down with no judgement. Making a list of everything you want to accomplish.
You can split up your goals in to categories such as, Travel, Family, Business, Financial, Spiritual, Personal Growth and Health just to name a few.
Now that you have brain stormed and developed your list you will need to cut some of the goals. Rank how important is each goal for you to complete. The ones that rank low, eliminate them.
Write out a step by step plan on what you will do, who you will need to work with and when each step needs to be completed by.
Consider a few things such as, will you enjoy the processes of accomplishing the goal? Have you considered all the positive and negative scenarios of achieving your goal? Is there someone you can partner up with? What resources will you need to complete the goal? Will you need to learn new skills before you can accomplish that goal?
At each step in the process, do you see your desired results? If yes continue on with your plan. If no, you will have to tweak your plan.
After you have attained the goal, you should celebrate your success.
You might be thinking, “I do not need to celebrate. I’m already motivated. I can just keep going and going.”
Maybe your right but does a bowl of ice cream not sound great as a small victory desert?
Goal setting is easy, taking the daily steps you need to, that’s the major challenge.
