I believe when you listen to the music of Frank Ocean it takes you back to what R&B music should be.
Now, I am not a major R&B guy but I do know good music when I hear good music. The Channel Orange album features songs like, “Thinkin Bout You”, “Not Just Money”, “Crack Rock”, “Lost”, “White” and “Forrest Gump.”
The good thing about music is that each person who listens to it relates to it in a different way, based on their past experiences and current mood.
The lyrics of Frank Ocean can represent the love of a woman and a man, a man and a man or a woman and a woman.
I am not the judge of people or lifestyles so it does not matter to me what your sexual preference is.
What I know is after listening to this album it is well made and the message is beautiful. Frank Ocean features some of today’s hottest artist such as Earl Sweatshirt, John Mayer, Andrea 3000 and Tyler, the Creator.
I believe this album teaches us about relationships; break up, first love and of course success principles.
13 Principles on Frank Ocean Album
“It usually doesn’t rain in Southern California, much like Arizona, my eyes don’t shed tears, but, boy, they pour”
Worldwide there are droughts that cause famine, hurt and pain to millions of people. Worldwide people also don’t show their emotions to each other. Sometimes it’s better to cry with someone when times are tough than cry when you are alone.
When you cry and let the tears flow you cleanse your body and allow yourself to start the healing process.
“I’ve been thinkin’ bout you, do you think about me still”
Name me one person who has not asked this question about someone they have lost in their life?
Sometimes this question is better when we asked it directly to the person we lost or are about to lose.
For some it is easy to move on after a relationship is done. For others, it takes months or even years to get over the pain and the hurt. The more I live the more I learn that it is better to have the conversations now before it is too late.
Asking the question and get the answer can help bring about closure.
“So why see the world, when you got the beach”
This quote takes me back to my first vacation to the Dominican Republic, a vacation I will not forget.
My friend and I had spent the whole day on the beach at a private island. On the way home, I was talking to some locals on the bus and said, “I love the beach, the sun and the free lifestyle. I wish I could have the beach every day.”
The woman I was speaking to said, “I would love to visit Canada some day and just experience one day of winter and snow.”
I asked how come she wanted to experience the snow?
The answer I got was, “Here in the Dominican Republic the temperature is always +30 (92F). Always sunny and it never rains for a long time. Sometimes you just need a change.”
I thought about what was just said to me, I guess that was the same reason I went on vacation myself.
“It’s the difference between having a home and living on the streets, That’s what it is, It’s not just money”
When I heard this line in the song, it made me think about what people say. Money is good and money is bad. Money is how we see it, it’s our perception.
Can money really make your life better and the life of other people better?
I believe it comes down to how you make it and how you use it.
“My silver spoon has fed me good”
Not every one of us is born with a silver spoon in our mouth. Meaning we all don’t come from wealth but we can create it if we so choose to.
When you work hard you reap the rewards of your hard work. When you have passion for something then you should pursue it to its fullest. If you pursue your dreams and goals you literally watch your life changes for the better.
“You don’t know how little you matter, until your all alone”
This statement comes from pain. One thing to remember is that no matter how large this universe is and how you fit it to it, you do matter.
When you are with others or when you are alone, you matter.
You make the life of other people better and more enjoyable. You add value to others everyday with your smile, your voice, your words and even just by being around people.
So, if you don’t think you matter just remember, one interaction with someone can change the lives of millions of people all around the world. You can choose to pass positive or negative vibes from yourself to others. It’s your choice.
“Don’t no one disrupt Nirvana, Don’t no one wanna blow the high, Crack Rock”
If you are in a state of meditation or if you are in a drug induced high, the feeling you get when you reach the peak of your high is one that you do not want to leave. Many people say this high is the feeling of enlightenment.
People who are addicted to that high will do anything to reach that state of “Nirvana” again and again.
I have never done crack or would ever want to. I hear it is one addictive drug and from the moment you experience that high you want it all the time to a point where nothing else matter and you are willing to lose everything you have ever worked for.
You can chase a high from drugs or you can chase a high living the life you want, gives you.
“You showed up after work, I’m bathing your body, Touch you in places I only know”
The love and closeness of 2 people who are in an intimate relationship is a beauty thing.
Knowing how to touch your partner is about them not about you. It does not have to lead to anything sexual. It is about exploring the beauty of the other person’s body.
When you give time to your partner your partner will do the same for you. That’s one of the many keys to have a successful long-term relationship and marriage.
“Couldn’t weight the love I’ve got for that girl”
Love is an emotion. It is not something you can put a number to from a scale 1-10. Love is about the closeness you feel in the presence of the person you are with.
As human beings, we have a different relationship with all the people we know. We also have different degrees of love the people we are close to.
One thing I have learned is if you love everyone, do not put a label on what love is. If you don’t label your love then can you love everyone the same. You begin to treat everyone with the same love.
This love becomes the same for everyone. From your parents, family, co-workers, the person living on the streets and everyone in between.
“One look out my window there’s trees talking like people”
Like many people, I like getting out into nature. Sometimes when I am not able to get out into the mountains or go for a walk outdoors, I open a window to let nature into my home. It is easy to open your window and listen to the birds, the wind and the various sounds of nature.
When you take a few moments to listen to the rustling for the trees you forget about your worries in the moment. You become still and enjoy the moment.
“Show me her passport, She is on her own tour”
There are many people, people we all know, who are out there looking for love in all the right and/or wrong places.
People go from relationship to relationship not finding happiness with their partner. They blame themselves and the other person for the failures of the relationship.
What you need to do is stop looking for happiness in other places. You can find happiness within yourself if you don’t judge with your ego.
“It’s a bad religion to be in love with someone who could never love you”
Unfortunately, to many people around the world are in relationships that are not health for us.
You might be hoping and waiting for your partner to change. Maybe you are waiting for your partner to love you a different way. The way you want to be loved.
If you are in a relationship for the “wrong” reasons then you will never be truly happy. You might find solitude has left you but really you are not connected to your partner. You really start living a life of quiet desperation hoping, wishing and dreaming of things to be different.
“If this is love, I know it’s true, I won’t for-get you”
In life, we meet many people can be in different relationships. Those relationships and experiences become the feelings of closeness and love that we have for those people.
No matter the context of the relationship, love for the other person is love nonetheless. In my life I can tell you, and I’m sure you can tell me the same, I have never forgotten the people who have made me smile, showed me love and made me feel like I mattered.
Why is this? The person did not have to say, I love you, all they had to do is show it to me and I to them.
As I listen to music, I am looking for different ways to connect to the music, the message and the artist. Frank Ocean and his album Channel Orange really allowed me to understand love and connection.
If you have listened to the album you already know what I mean but if you have not heard the 2012 album, where he was nominated for different awards, I would give it a listen.
I know you will enjoy the album as much as I did.
