Thought of the Day: June 1, 2018 – Finding Balance
How are you finding balance between work and your personal life?
To find balance, you need to look at where you are and where you want to be. If is important to take time during the day and think of ways to find balance.
You may have to develop a step by step plan on how you will find this stability. Those steps will help us as we work towards the goals we have set. In turn this will allows you to develop a positive attitude, take ownership and change what needs to be changed.
What is balance?
So many of us are so out of it that we try to describe it but can’t since the words we use are not true to the definition.
Balance is a condition in which different elements are equal, proportionate and/or in harmony.
Being balanced means to, do what you like to do and not neglecting other important things that need to be done.
The truth is there are so many things that need to be in balance that it can be easy to be out of balance. With so many thoughts fighting for your time and attention such as technology, friends, family, work, hobbies, health and our spiritual practice it is not easy to find the right balance.
I believe if you’re going to find balance between two or more things those things should become a part of your daily life. Finding balance is the key to successful life as you cannot do any one thing forever and expect another part of your life not to suffer.
A few things that need balance in life include:
- Work verse life balance.
- Time verse money.
- Family verse after work activities.
- Starting a new hobby verse sitting and watching television.
Today, with internet streaming, it is too easy to turn on the television and sit there for hours and think you are interacting with your family.
What happens in most households is, one person is watching television while the other person is on their phone, laptop or tablet.
Having TV time can be beneficial but in most cases there is nothing on, so turn off the television and put away electronic devises and spend some quality time with your family.
While it is important to spend your time doing the things you like to do. Many of us stay busy and do not make time to be alone. This alone time can be important as it can be used to contemplate what needs to be done next.
What you should be doing, how to best handle a situation and its gives you time to slow down so see what you might need to stop doing.
Finding balance in health is important. Not only should you exercise but you need to watch the food you are eating.
There should be a balance between your wants and needs. I know for myself, if I could, I would want everything I do not have. They make stuff for someone, so why not you?
But remember you really should focus on getting the things you need not just want. You do not need to rack up credit cards debit because you want something. Either you find a way to make more money or you find yourself in financial trouble later.
How about giving your time to charity. Helping others can be a very fulfilling and can give you the balance you need in your life.
Lastly, to find balance you need a way to know if you are living a balanced life or not. There are many ways to find out but since I am visual, I suggest a Balance Wheel.
What is a balance wheel?
It is a way to grade yourself on what you are doing based on the activities you want to do every day to achieve your optimal life.
- Start drawing a circle.
- Around the circle write down different activities you do or want to do each day. (consider learning time, family time, charity, exercise, eating health, working and so on.)
- Then you grade yourself 1-10 on how balanced you feel doing each activity based on how much you’d like to do it.
Do you spend too much time doing one activity and not enough time doing others?
If you do not have a perfect circle or it means your life is out of balance. You need to find time to reevaluate what is important to you.
Finding balance is not about having 10’s. It’s about doing what you love and not neglecting all the other things you would love to do.
