The Technology Takeover
Enlightened in a technology world these days seem almost impossible. You may have heard stories of people going high up in the mountains of India to meditate and find their spiritual guru.
I started to wonder, is it possible to find enlightenment with all the digital gadgets we have access to?
Since the digital age began in 1970, it seems harder than ever, for North American’s and other people around the world, to find the kind of peace humanity is seeking.
The same kind of peace that millions of people in third world countries seem to have had for thousands of years.
With all the different electronics we have access to including; phones, watches, digital watches, cameras, television, video games, music players, laptops and computers, the world seems to be run by digital products.
Not to mention kids toys and medical devices. The scary thing is there is still more to come. Companies are all working hard to develop the next big item for us to purchase and add to our electronic collection.
With all the electronic devices it is a wonder why we need to find enlightenment more today than ever before?
I want you to explore the possibility of being enlightened in a technology world. Is it possible for humanity to find the same internal peace which once our ancestors practiced?
4 Ways to Be Enlightened in A Technology World
On a podcast that I co-host, we discussed this topic in more detail. Have a listen:
Put the Smartphone Away
This seems easy enough to put down the phone does it not? But stats show that many of us stare at our phone screen for 90 minutes a day, on average. Have we become a society that is addicted to our cell phones?
We connect to people, place and things. We can access information, make calls to people on the other side of the world, connect with social media friends, play games, have access to the sports score, can do online banking, book vacations and even take picture and record videos.
Not only do we spend too much time on our phones, many of us come home from a long day at the office and spend time in front of the computer and/or television.
We are slowly becoming a nation with no down time. It is important to get into the habit of putting down the cell phone, turning off the computer and television. I would suggest you turn off all electronic devices 30-60 minutes before bedtime.
We need to give our brains time to unwind from all the data it is consuming, not to mention, a break from all the billions of subconscious calculations it makes all day long.
Take the 30-60 minutes each evening and spend time taking to your spouse, making lunch for the next day, reading or practicing mindful meditation. Click here to read 25 reason to meditate.
You will go to sleep more relaxed, wake up with more energy and find that you are able to accomplish more each day.
Access to Scriptures
The internet is available to anyone who has a data plan on their mobile device, on a computer at home or work or if you have access to Wi-Fi.
Access to the internet has made it easier than long on to numerous website and look up religious scripture.
Unfortunately, to many people in society believe it there is a taboo with carrying religious books with them. This causes many people not to carry those books they enjoy reading.
I believe the internet takes that taboo and kills it. With well over 20 million religious sites on the internet, it is easier to read scriptures over lunch, on the bus, train, at the park or when your feel you need an uplifting word.
Books were not available to the masses until the invention of the printing press. This meant people did not have access to information freely.
Today the story is different. Many countries all over the world teach their citizens how to read. The unfortunate part is that 774 million people do not know how to read. That means about 10% of the population may never pick up a book or read a religious scripture.
There is one major advantage the internet gives people who can’t read. For the people who cannot read, they have access to websites like YouTube and Audible. They can listen to audio programing and find the peace and enlightenment they desire.
Today, social media has become a huge distraction for millions of people. Countless hours each year can be spent on Facebook,YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat and various other social sharing platforms.
If you are looking to be enlightened in a technology world, there is still an advantage to social media, if you look for it.
Using different social media platforms, you can find and connect to people who have gone through similar hardships you face or have faced.
You are capable of connecting and communicating with those people, developing friendships and finding ways to overcome adversities, together.
According to Staista.com, there are over 2.3 billion people using various social networks. Many people engage with others using more than one social media platform.
You should be careful when you are on social media. If you use social media, the way it was intended, you can connect with top spiritual and thought leaders.
You can connect with the Pope Francis, Desmond Tutu, Deepak Chopra, The Dalai Lama, Paulo Coelho, Thich Nhat Hanh, Eckhart Tolle, Joel Osteen and thousands of others.
You can read quotes, articles and interviews which expand on their knowledge. This can help you find the enlightenment that you seek.
Science and Technology
Here is something to consider. If science and technology can help us live longer, then should we use that extra time to learn more about ourselves and the truth around us?
I believe we can and should use the gift science and technology gives us to expand our knowledge.
There are many alternative views to finding enlightenment. Here are two that I have written about previously.
I believe the truth lies somewhere between these great books. Have you read either of these books? Have a look at each article and for yourself answer the question, could either of these view-point be right?
I would like you to contemplate this question, can science and the advancements in technology help us really find enlightenment with all the turmoil around us?
Will humanity realize that we are all part of the human family?
If we are to live longer, we should focus our time on enlightenment. You and I should not spend our time figuring out how to survive.
Helping each person find true enlightenment should be our goal and focus. I believe if there is other life in the universe, they already know and practice this truth.
