Nine Easy Tips To Meet Your Health Goals
Want to lose weight? We all do right? Want to be healthy? That’s a better goal to strive for.
May 3, 2016, I turned 38 years old and am inching each day towards the age of 40. As I go through each day, I live the best I can and eat as healthy as possible. On Tuesdays, I do not eat meat and have not since I can remember. I first started doing this for my parents but now have adopted the habit as a part of my life style.
The New Year is coming and many of us will want to get the holiday weight off or work towards losing that weight that we have wanted to for many years. Some of us will succeed and some of us will try again next year.
Do I always eat healthy? The answer is no. Do I always get my three liters of water? The answer to that is also no. Although my wife, Lien Kaura, and I do are best to eat health every day, there are days we eat less than our best.
We are not perfect and do enjoy eating chips, cookies and fast food as a treat. One thing we have always done is look for ways to not over indulge in these foods so we can live the health lifestyle we want.
Nine Easy Tips For Better Heath
I share with you nine tips I have used over the years to eat right and get leaner as I get older. These tips have worked for me and if you apply them I know they will also work for you. Remember if you do not feel you are in shape that ok. You can start today and change the life you have, to the life you want.
Remove Junk Food From Your Home
This is one of the easiest steps to do but not always the easiest steps to follow. Start by going to your pantry and removing the chips, cookies, candies and anything that is not good for you. You can tell which they will be very easily. If it is full of salt, sugar or is processed it’s not the best for you.
If you have not opened any of the items, you can donate it to the food bank. Now if the items are open, then you have two choices to make. You can finish the food or throwing it out.
When I got serious and when I did my three month pantry clean I picked the second choice. When there is no junk food in your home you are forced to eat something healthy.
Eat Protein, Carbs and Fats With Every Meal
With all the talk of no carbohydrates, gluten free, low fat, high protein diets it can be hard to know what to eat for every meal without being confused.
I like to prepare my meals ahead of time so I usually make my breakfast and lunch the night before. I find ways to eat healthy fats such as avocados, health carbs such as veggies and a small amount of animal protein with every meal.
Your body needs all three to function, so give it what it needs and give it the best options from all three groups.
Do not Snack After Dinner
Depending on your work schedule this can fluctuate. But if you work a nine to five type job and go to the gym, do yoga or like to walk you should remember that dinner is your last meal and you should do your best to eat it by six or seven pm.
I’m not perfect and sometimes I do want to snack on something after dinner such as a piece of chocolate or something else that is sweet.
If you did step one, then there would be no chocolate in your home and you will not snack on that or any other junk food. Instead opt for a piece of fruit or some veggies.
Do Not Fast For Long Periods of Time
Sometimes people think that if you skip a meal it’s a smart thing to do. The logic sounds good. You eat less calories and this mean you get lean by losing weight, right?
Wrong! When you skip meals, you can cause your body to go into starvation mode and the next time you eat a meal your body will decide to stores the calories from that meal as fat on your body, instead of using it as fuel to run your body.
Your body does this because it does not know when the next meal will come.
It is much better to eat five or six small meals each day and not to skip meals unless you are sleeping your required six to eight hours a night.
Don’t Quit At Your First Setback
There are going to be times when you are not going to be able to control what’s from breakfast, snacks, lunch or dinner. There will be times when you are out at a party and there is a bowl of chips and you reach for it and have some.
That ok. You should live a little. Have just a few if you can’t help yourself but so not have the whole bowl. Don’t be mad at yourself if you ate a few. You are not off track and you will not fail at your health and fitness goals.
When you do eat the chip, remind yourself why you ate them in the first place, then make a conscious effort to look for something better to eat next time.
Learn To Say No To Certain Foods
This may not be easy all the time. Again, we all want to enjoy our favorite foods but they are not always the best for us.
If your goal is to get lean, you will soon learn to say NO to certain foods and drinks if you truly want to accomplish what you have set out to do.
We have already talked about replacing junk food with healthier options. If you like your beer, wine or cocktail remember to drink in moderations. A glass of beer with a meal now and then is fine. A glass of wine with dinner is also fine every so often. It’s when you drink that third or fourth glass of beer or wine that will take you away from your goal. Remember although that beer or glass of wine tastes great it’s mostly just full of empty calories.
If you are not able to say no to certain food and work towards your goal of wanting to be lean, then take small steps. You can succeed if you try.
Yes, it’s not a crime to eat what you love and it is your body and you can choose to put anything you like into it.
But if that is your goal is to get fit for the new year and live a healthier lean lifestyle then you will need to become conscious of your decisions.
Eat Pre and Post Workout Meals
It is not unusual for me to have my pre and post workout meal as my daily snack. We need to make sure we have enough energy for a good workout if we are going to achieve the results we want.
If you are going to the gym, doing yoga or any type of exercise you will need to eat something so your body burns the right things for fuel.
After your workout is complete, this is a critical time. This is when your body is screaming for nutrition it needs.
Have a protein shake or a protein bar to fuel and repair your muscles.
Use Less Condiments With Your Meals
I’m not going to lie, I used to love my condiments. Ketchup, Bar-B-Que sauce and mayo were my top three. I loved to dip my fries and meats in the sauce. I always felt that it enhanced the taste.
Over the last 10 years, I have cut down on the amount of sauces I use and in turn I have cut out unnecessary calories that were adding to my waist line.
Instead of using BBQ sauce, ketchup, salt, soya sauce or mayo I now reach for dry spices such as Cheyenne, pepper, mustard, garlic and ginger powder and of course my favorite hot sauce. As long the sauce is not full of salt or sugar.
Have A Cheat Meal
Like I mentioned early my wife, Lien, and I, do plan on having one cheat meal a week and sometimes we push it to two. There are weeks we will not eat a cheat meal for two weeks.
I have heard people say the idea of the cheat meal is to trick the body in to believing it is getting food it normally does not get, so it processes it differently.
Win-Win I would say. You get to enjoy a meal you have been working hard all week to enjoy. Remember you do deserve the cheat mean. You also need to remember that it’s a meal and it should still be within your normal portion size.
There are many ways to get fit and get lean for the new year. These are just a few simple ways you can use today, to see some results. Find a partner to exercise with and to be health with. You will make it a lot easier on yourself because you are kind of competing to eat better and you also have someone you are accountable to.
