How to Determine Which Credit Product is Right For You

Which credit product is best?

Although my day consists of opening accounts for customers, there are times I will answer questions about credit.

Many time I will sit with teens who are new to the financial banking world. They all tell me they did not learning anything about money, credit or interest in school.

One of my teen clients asked me about credit cards and why would she would want to get one. I told her this was a good question and that was not easy for me to answer for her.

But I proceed to give her an example of why I have a credit card. As we chatted she asked me more questions. I explained the difference between credit cards such as American Express, Visa and MasterCard, Overdraft and Line of Credit.

This is what I told her:

Visa or MasterCard

Typically you will get one of these credit products when you are between 18-22 with little to no problem. Most student will get their first credit card  when they transition from high school to university or college.

Having a credit card is not a bad thing unless you are just making minimum payments. This is the worst thing you can do.

I gave her an example of how I use the 21 day grace period to my advantage. I do not use my debit card to make any purchase and I only use my credit card.

Not only do I get to collect points but I build my credit score and I am not using real-time cash.G

Giving an example, I showed her how long it would take to pay off her credit card balance if she just paid the minimum requirement each month. I explained that she would be paying anywhere between 18-23% interest. If she only paid the minimum required balance at the end of each statement date,  she would begin to pay interest on interest.

Now you begin to pay interest which can exceed the 18-22% you originally agreed upon. If she made minimum payments you would be paying compounding interest for a long time. It would take you years to pay off your credit card. You would pay hundreds to thousands of dollars in interest.

I suggested to only use a credit card or debit but never both. When using the credit card, make the required payments in full each statement period. Never carry a balance.

If you don’t think you can stick to this plan, don’t use a credit card.

Overdraft

This is a product that can be added as additional credit to a checking account and/or savings account.

The nice feature about overdraft is that it helps many people use temporary credit. This credit product helps payments not return NSF (Non Sufficient Funds).

A NSF fee can cost you $45-$80 in additional costs. To me it makes sense to pay a few dollars for temporary use of the overdraft option.

Even if the cost is $5 each month to use the overdraft protection and $10 in interest, it would still be a better deal than having 2 cheques go NSF.

Of course, if your account stays overdrawn, in the negative, the fees can add-up. The advantage of having the coverage ensures you will not negatively affecting your credit score.

I told my customer that it is best to use the overdraft only when needed or between paychecks. The idea is to cover unexpected expenses not to live in the overdraft.

My customer asked me what the difference between a credit card and overdraft.

I explained that with a credit card gives 21 days grace for payments. Once you use the overdraft protection you will pay interest right away.

This interest can vary from bank to bank and country to country. Where I work the rate is based on Prime Plus.

The prime rate is set by the Bank of Canada. The plus (+) is an addition rate of interest determined by each individuals loan amount and credit score.

I explained to the customer that the interest rate, for most people, will be about half of what your conventional credit cards are.

Line of Credit and Loans

This credit product can have many uses from an automobile loan, consolidation loan, a home equity line of credit and/or a personal loan for home renovations.

The loan and/or line of credit (LOC) amount most people request will range from $10,000 to millions. The loan or LOC may have an amortization period attached to it. This is the length of time the loan must be paid back by. This can range between 1 and 7 years for most people.

Because the customer will be paying back the loan over a set time, he or she may have a lower interest rate compared to a line of credit.

Example a home equity line of credit may be prime. A loan for a car my be 4-8%.

A loan and/or LOC is a more complex credit product. The line of credit is a product for someone who is expecting to keep an ongoing balance. This person understands they will be paying interest payments on their loan.

A LOC is for someone who may be looking for revolving credit.

Summary

I explained the benefits of each type of credit product. Why each has its place and how one should consider using it to take full advantage of its purpose. Understanding each credit product is key for the users success with that product.

Misusing credit can end you up in a heap of trouble. Trouble that can follow you for the rest of your life. Things like bankruptcy may sound familiar.

A simple misunderstanding, misuse or missed payment can mess up your future credit requests.

If you are going to pick a credit product, pick the right one based on what you’re looking to do. If you plan on holding a balance or not should be part of your decision. The amount you need should also be a consideration.

Lastly you should never lent your credit, your money, to someone else. Trusting that they will pay you back, can end you in a world of trouble.

I believe my customer got lot of our conversation. Sitting with her for a 30 minute conversation, compared to what she did not learn in 12 years in school allowed her to be further educated. The next time she considers a credit card, overdraft and/or LOC or loan I believe she will think back to your conversation.

My last suggestion to her was not to keep a high balance on any credit product that has a high interest rate.

Thought of the Day: August 7, 2018 – Thousand Miles

When does a journey of a thousand miles begin?

I have contemplated this question numerous times but today after reading the credited quote of Lao Tzu, I decided to write my thoughts.

“Do the difficult things while they are easy and do the great things while they are small. A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.”

I know the journey begins when we decide to take the first step, but when do we decide? When we face with hard times? When we are ready to make a change? Perhaps when we are ready to reach our ultimate goals?

From my understanding, according to the Tibetan Book of the Dead, we decide our first step before we ever take birth to our parents. Our journey is one that we need to take. One that will take us through our karmic predicament.

Some say and believe that we are born a clean slate. We choose our journey. From the moment we are born to the day we die. We will continue to pick and choose the experiences we want to have.

This is the ability to have free will among the 7.5 Billion or so people.

To me the journey of a thousand miles begins the moment you and I decide to be reborn.

The reason I believe this is because I believe in reincarnation. I believe we continue to take form in a body in which we feel can help us achieve ultimate nirvana or enlightenment.

I believe once we decide on rebirth, every step, decision, set back and experience we choose to have is an adjustment on our journey.

After thinking about this, I came to a concluding you can’t start anything over again. You are already in the process. All you can do is make an adjustment to the way you are doing something.

Want to be a millionaire, help the poor, build a technology the world has not witnessed yet? This is your path to success.

You can take many steps on your path and their will be many forks in the road. But before you could start the journey, a decision was first made. You and I had to take birth to accomplish this goal.

This was the first step in the thousands miles. After the decision each step is the adjustment based on where we feel we are to where we want to be.

What is your thought on this?

Do you believe that you can start a journey of a thousand miles more than once?

Are you like me? Do you believe all the changes, decisions and experiences we have to be adjustments to where you and I ultimately want to go?

Thought of the Day: July 20, 2018 – Its Hard to Get People to Talk

The other day, in our meeting, one of my co-workers said, “I find that its hard to get customers to open up. They are not telling me what I need to know so I can sell to them.”

Listening to this statement and trying to understand why my co-worker felt this way, it become apparent that others felt the same. As I listened to the conversation, go from positive to negative, each one of the people I work with had something to say that was fuelling the fire. They all felt that it was a challenge to get customers to talk to them.

I spoke up and said, “I disagree. We are sales professionals. As professionals if we find that the customer is not talking or is giving us vague answers, it is our job to find ways to get the customer to talk.”

In my opinion we are in charge of our day-to-day success so this cannot be our attitude. I mentioned that perhaps we need to ask different questions. We may need to change the words of a question we are used to asking. We need to consider asking it in a different way. Do so can bring us the success we hope to achieve.

Continuing I said, “As professionals we need to learn the different customer personality types that we are communicating with. We have to learn to talk to their style of communication. We can’t talk to everyone the same. If we do we will experience frustration because we feel our customers does not want to talk to us.”

The truth we are not getting to know the customer, the way the customer wants us to get to know them. Conversations are only hard because we believe them to be hard.

We take our false believes and allow them to dictate our day. We bring them to meeting and in the end our pay cheque is most effected by them.

I feel my statement positively impacted only a few of the members of my teams. My goal is to help my team see that its hard because we have not learned how to deal with challenges. We face the same challenges with different people. We need to learn the right way to deal with reoccurring issues.

When you are sitting face to face with a customer that is not talkative, what do you do to get them to open up and talk?

What is your favourite open-ended question to have people talk about themselves, their goals and objectives?

Thought of the Day: July 19, 2018 – Drinking Problem

This past Saturday I came into work excited about the first meeting I had booked for the day. Unfortunately, my client was a no-show. Instead of sitting in my office and wasting time, I decided to walk around my place of employment and greet customers. I was doing my best to add value to what they needed to accomplish on their visit.

As I helped my customer, one of the other customers started to say loudly, “I’m drunk. I have been drinking all night.” He kept repeating that.

I thought to myself its 8:30am in the morning. Maybe the guys was just joking around. I looked over and the gentleman was well dressed but was having trouble standing. I finished up with my customer and  went over to make small talk to the customer the appeared to be drinking.

Saying hello and introduction myself, I asked him if he had been drinking and how he got to our location.

He said he had been drinking and in fact he was drunk. He said, “Don’t worry friend is driving my Mercedes SUV.”

I stepped away and looked out the window to see if could stop the SUV. The windows were down but not one was inside or outside the vehicle.

Quickly my supporting manager walked outside to get the gentleman’s license plate number and immediately called the police.

I continued to talk to the customer and asked him not to drive. I told him it was a bad idea and that he could cause an accident.

He proceeded to tell me it was not my concern and I should mind my business.

My response was, “Sir, I do care for your well-being. I do not want to see you leaving and getting into an accident and hurting someone or yourself.”

I asked his where he lived. He said he lived 5 minutes away and that he was going to drive home.

I told him we had called the police and I recommend he not drive. But the customer decided to get into his SUV. I stood outside his car and proceeded to ask him not to drive. He backed out of the parking stall. This is when I noticed he had front end and side damage to his SUV.

Again I told the customer, “Sir don’t drive. It looks like you have hit something and you have damage to your vehicle.” He told me with 2 kind words to F-off and mind my business. He then proceeded to speed away out of our parking lot.

The police came in to my place of business and took a statement from my supporting manager since she made the call. It turns out the policy caught the guy 2 blocks from his him.

From this experience, I learned you can not have a conversation with someone who does not believe he or she is drunk. No matter, how much you all them what the consequences are they don’t listen. They do not always care that they can lose their license, pay thousands of dollars in fines, lose their car and even their jobs.

They do not feel they will kill anyone or even themselves. Drunk people do not feel they can be caught or that they are even drunk. Someone who feels they can drive drunk and are not going to hurt anyone or themselves is not making a good decision.

Before the man was stopped and arrested by the police, I asked him to walk home. I even told him that I would walk him home since he was only about a 10 minute walk. But this was to no avail.

In the past I have made bad decisions and thank God nothing happen. Today, I understand my mistakes and do not make them anymore. I understand my decision and what could have happen.

How about you? Do you drink and drive? If so, why do you continue to do so when so much can be lost?

Thought of the Day: June 21, 2018 – Spiritual Ownership

Taking spiritual ownership means you understand the power of the word and how you use it. Too many people use the word to manipulate others to their will

Spiritual ownership means you are aware, mindful and enlightened to the needs of others.

When you take ownership of your spiritual life, you do not let others influence your decisions if you understand the principles you stand for.

Take control of your life and make better decision for today and for the future. You will have less stress because you know the decision you’re making comes from a foundation of principles that was outlined by the word of God.

You make the right decisions based on your morals and understand and then leave the rest in the hands of God or the universe.

Each day we face many hard decisions. Each choice you make will have a chain reaction you may not understand. The best thing you can do consult your religious book. Once you have considered all the possibilities, make the best choice. Then know the rest is up to God.

I will not tell you to go to church or take your kids. You will have to decide that for yourself.

I know many people who do and don’t go to church. Their lives are no better or no worse than those who do.

Going to church can bring community, direction, clarity of mind and thoughts. As well it can ground you in positive moral believes. But staying at home with family and reading the word and discussing it together can do the same thing.

Taking spiritual ownership means is about know what your five senses experience. Today social media and television bombard you with negative.

Without even realizing it you can be watching a television show and they might be talking about topics, showing images or using language you do not want your family to experience.

What you do next is up to you. Do you continue to watch, change the channel or send your kids out of the room. If the images do not line up with your faith or beliefs you can choose whatever you want based on how you want to take spiritual ownership.

Think about joining a community of people who get together and talk and discuss the word. Learn how to apply the principles to your life. Discuss the meaning of the principles with your spouse or children. Each person has an opportunity to grow from this experience.

When you take spiritual ownership you learn what you believe in and what you stand for.  This becomes the foundation you build your life on.

My dad once said to me, “I can bend in my beliefs but I cannot break them”.

At that time I did not understand what he was talking about. But when listen to what he said with a spiritual ear, I finally understood. He was taking ownership of what he believed in.

Stand for something and be true to what you believe in.

Thought of the Day: June 20, 2018 – Financial Ownership

In order for you to be successful with money you have to take financial ownership of your money.

Taking ownership of your money means sitting down and reviewing your financial picture. Look at where you are today and decide where you want to be in the future. Take responsibility for the choices you have made thus far.

Many people do not make the right decisions with their money. Soon they find themselves in financial trouble. They let bad financial decisions compound and soon they can’t dig themselves out of it.

When you decided to take ownership of your finances, ask yourself, “What are my financial goals?” “What will my financial outlook be if I don’t change?” These questions allow you to see where you are right and help you see if you’re on the path to financial freedom.

You have heard the phrase, keeping up with the Jones. If you want to keep up, then you have to earn like them and control your pocket-book. THEY DID!

Before you can keep up with them, you may need to fix your situation. You cannot worry about where others are spending their money. You have to know where your money is going.

The Jones are out earning you. They are not living on credit and they only buy the things they can afford to pay for. Remember the Jones might be friends, family and co-workers. But they all have different goals, wants, needs and a financial plan.

The people you are trying to keep up with have financial goals in place that allow them to buy what they want. If they don’t, they might be like you, buying stuff to keep up with the Jones.

Most of us are just buying stuff because we want it now. We do not put much thought of how this purchase will affect our finances later. Your goal is to not end up like them, so change your habits and change your life.

If you are a married, this means both partners could be earning money. This also means that both partners have the ability to spend money without the other knowing. If you are married, sit with your spouse and look at past bills and see where the money is being spent.

By knowing and understanding where the money is spent, you can devise a plan to control non-essential expenses. You might need to set a budget, cut up credit cards and go on a cash only option. You have to do whatever you can to take control of your money.

Until you do, your expenses will keep getting the best of you.

Taking financial ownership means looking at where you work and how much you make. Working is not just about collecting a paycheque and do your best to stretch your money.

When you and I don’t earn enough we tend to use credit cards. Soon we are in trouble because you can’t pay off the full balance.

Look at your current job. Consider your potential income over the next 5 years. Look at what your income could be if I worked a little harder and smarter. Let’s say you go from $69k to $75k a year. This is only $6000 more in the next 5 year.

This might sound like a lot. But with an increase in income, you typically pay more tax. Also. inflation would continue to decrease your spending dollar. Decide if you continue to do what you’re doing, if you will get ahead or not.

To keep up with the Jones you might consider siting and taking with the Jones. Find out what they are doing to achieve financial success.

You can read any of the thousands of books written on finances to help you understand, control and change your spending habits. If you can’t afford to spend $20 for a book, go to your local library and pick it up for free.

Lastly, consider sitting with a credit counselling professional. They do cost money, but the money spent will be of great value if you take financial ownership of your future.

Realize you can’t pass the blame to anyone but yourself. If you do not take ownership of your financial future, understand no one else is going to.

Thought of the Day: June 19, 2018 – Business Owner Takes Ownership

How important is it, when the business owner takes ownership for the results of the business and its employees?

It is the most important factor to the success of the business in my opinion.

When owner take pride in what their business stands for they allow themselves to accomplish more of the goals they have set out to do.

At smaller companies, business owner are usually the first at work and the last one to leave. As the business grows they give responsibility to members of the team. This is one way a business owner takes ownership. Delegating tasks and focusing on more important day-to-day production.

The business owner should learn the names of each employee, no matter the size of the company. When you know your people, your people respect you and want to work for you.

When owners know the goals of employees, they can help in the achievement them.  The more your employees grow, the more your company will grow. This allows you to find employees who are motivated. Then you can promote them and allow them to take ownership in key positions.

Take ownership of the results of your company by standing behind the brand. Make sure all the employees are also behind the brand, mission and vision statement. Owners should share their vision of the company and help employees understand how they fit into that vision.

Another way the business owner takes ownership is by not blaming employees when goals are not met. Leadership is knowing that the blame lies on the owner and the management team.

This is why it is important to have great relationships with your employees. Taking ownership means you let employees go who are not holding up there end of the employment deal.

As the manager you need to hire the right people to do the job.

Although employee should take pride in what they do, it is not always the case. Even though they receive a paycheque, sometimes they feel they are owed this cheque just for showing up to work.

If you are an employee, never forget that there are students in who are willing to take your job for less pay and get experience in the job market. If you work for someone, have the attitude that this job will help you gain the skills which can move you towards the goals you have set.

Taking ownership as an employee begins with getting to work on time, taking pride in your work, and work space.

What do you do when you first get to work?

Is your desk a mess or do you have a clean desk policy?

I believe the habits you develop now carry forward throughout the day and even after work.

I make a list of what needs to be complete that day. Then priorities what needs to be completed.

Your boss hired you because you are the best candidate for the job. Prove your worth to them and yourself. For all the work you do give 100% of your ability, understanding and skill level.

If you are not working to your full capability, it will show. As soon as your boss takes ownership of your work, you might find that you don’t have job to go to.

When the business owner takes ownership, it means they are willing to help others, complete the task and succeed.

When you take ownership you become a leader. If and when you decided to move positions in the future, your new employer will recognize the skill you have. It is possible they will pay you more because your net worth to the company is greater.

Thought of the Day: June 18, 2018 – Families Taking Ownership

Families taking ownership is how communication starts. This is the first step in understanding how you will have a great relationship with your spouse and raise your kids.

If you have a healthy relationship with your spouse chances are you will also have a healthy relationship with your kids.

Have you ever considered how you treat your spouse or how does your spouse treat you?

How do you react to each other when you’re around the your kids? What is your reaction when your kids so something wrong?

When you have a positive attitude and no ego, you are aware of how you want to treat them. It lines up with your believes of who you are.

Does your family have an understand of each member? How about some goals?

If so, your families taking ownership for its future. In my opinion it is responsibility of the parents to help their kids get on the path they have chosen. Parents need to encourage when their children fail or have set backs.

Adults have a responsibility towards each other. Both spouses are responsible for themselves and to each other. If you know your spouse is not headed in the direction then you must talk to each other. Find out what is holding the other person back.

When families take ownership it is easy to criticize someone’s faults. Instead inspire them to go out and learn how to move forward. Do not judge them. Rather help them get back. Ask questions, listen, understand and/or help your family member through their problems.

Taking ownership means:

  1. Focusing on what is important.
  2. Cutting out non-essential television time.
  3. Get the required education for each family member and their individual goals.
  4. Focus on the health of the family
  5. Eat one meal together. Build family bonding time.
  6. Setting goal and helping each other succeed.
  7. Regardless of who’s fault, everyone steps up to get the job done.
  8. Be a positive example for your family to follow.

I would love to hear about and see more families taking ownership for the results of the household. But I am aware, you cannot make them change or take ownership.

All you can do is led by example. Hopefully they will see you your work ethic and want to emulate it. It is your responsibly to control of the environment. Choose wisely.

Thought of the Day: June 15, 2018 – Take Ownership

How important is it to take ownership of where you are and where we want to go in life?

I believe it is vital as you work towards accomplishing your goals and developing a positive attitude.

In order to take ownership of what you want out from life you first have to know what you want from life.

What makes you come alive? What keeps you awake at night and working well into the morning? Do you have big dreams and have you set goals to accomplish these dreams?

Once you have set your goals you need to know what obstacles are.

Is it time? The location? A person? A situation? Or it the obstacles the person in the mirror? What is not in your way today which could be tomorrow?

We need to understand and overcome our obstacles. Obstacles usually stop us or slow us down. But if we understand how to remove them then we can succeed.

Taking ownership of what you want, means making peace with your past. In most cases that’s the one things that is holding us back. Once you acknowledge these hindrances you can deal with them.

You may need to apologies to the people you hurt in the past or people you are hurting now. Ask them for forgiveness. To take ownership, it means you share your past with others so they do make the same mistakes.

This new-found understanding leads you towards your new future and will not stop you.

Sometimes it is not our past that holds us back, but it is the present moment. Maybe you are trapped by an addiction?

Today we have access to more things and it can be harder to realize we are addicted to things. Many people are addicted to their cell phone, the internet, work, drugs, sex, porn, television, people, food especially sugar, success and failure.

If you have an addiction to any of these things you need to recognize that addiction and take ownership of it. Tell someone of you trust about your addiction. It is time to get help and the only way is to first admit it. If it is serious, seek professional help.

If you want to succeed you have to give up the one thing that you are having the toughest time giving up!

Once you realize that you can take control of your addiction you realize no one else will give you what you want in life, but you.

Once you realize this, you take ownership of the results you want. Far too many people do not want to admit they have any addictions. They never let the addiction go. They become more addicted over time.

Taking ownership for your life is your responsibility. If you do not take action to take control of your life, then other people and/or your addiction, will control you. You will go through life unhappy until your world crashes.

I hope you do not wait that long before you start making positive changes in your life. Decide to take ownership of your life and get around a good group of people. People who will hold you accountable to your actions.

No one is going to care about your wellbeing more than yourself. Get up and take action! Find the very thing that is stopping you and devise a plan to conquer it. Only after you have beat your addition can you go out and help others do the same.

Confucius said, “Attack the evil that is within yourself, rather than attacking the evil that is in others.”

Thought of the Day: June 14, 2018 –  Spiritual Change

Spiritual change happens when people are ready for it.

Making a spiritual change can impact your decisions about your future, your family and others in our society. This can result in positive difference that you were not expecting to see.

A spiritual change is needed for many so they may realize the goals they have.

In order for this to happen you must ask yourself, “How do I see God?”

When answering this question take a look deep within yourself. Once you know how you see God you may want to ask yourself a second question.

“How does God see me?”

This question will cause you to look at your character and how you conduct your life. Answer this question from the perspective that God is standing in front of you and tell you all the good and not so good about you.

Based on the information you get, what changes would you need to make to get back to the path you know you should be on?

Be truthful with yourself, remember God knows everything about you. So open up those “boxes” that hold your deepest darkest secrets and deal with them.

To experience spiritual change you need to understand one faith is not geographical. You can be living anywhere in the world and practice any faith, religion or spiritual practice you want.

Ask yourself,

  1. “How do I view people from a faith or culture that is not the same as mine?”
  2. “Do I have a negative view on how I see people from other cultures?”
  3. “Am I understanding of their view even if they are not the same as mine?”

You have to be accepting of those from other faiths to experience a spiritual awakening. Take an interest in cultures different from yours.

Do you know why you have such a strong relationship to your own personal faith, culture or religious background? Do you believe what you believe because you were told to do so from a young age or did you study the doctrine yourself and form your own opinions?

Spiritual understanding occurs when you have the ability to look at things from a different perspective. This opens your eyes and give you the ability to change how you view yourself and others around you.

Where did your understanding and concept of God originate?

Did you read about God and then form your thoughts on who God must be? Or are you following the definition that is given to us in all religious and spiritual books?

Do not put God in a box and expect him to be the way you see him. Contemplate, why would God be the way I think he is and not the way others see him?

To experience spiritual change your ego needs to change before you see that truth that God in much bigger, can do more and is more in charge of what is happening than we understand.

Praying can connect you to the divine understanding. There is no right or wrong way to pray other than do it with the right heart.

I was born into a Hindu family. As I grew up I always had a lot of question. Questions my parents could not always answer about my faith. As I grew older and was able to experience more of the world around me.

I started reading books from other religions. I learned about Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism. The more I read books from these cultures the more I enjoyed what I was reading.

I have always kept an open mind as I search for answers on my spiritual journey.

Although I have not adopted all the practices from every religion I consider myself to be of all religious backgrounds and faiths. How else can I begin to understand all 7.5 billion people on Earth?

May spiritual journey tells me that we are all one, so I can change my religion as I see fit. Maybe you need to do this in your own life? For me it was the right thing to do. I opened my eyes and decided not to separate myself from others.
