A boss is only a position at a job or company, while a leader is someone people want to follow. In history, leaders have had millions of people die for them.
One of the qualities a leader has is he/she helps people see the potential in themselves and helps them raise above their own believes. Great leaders want to hire a team of people who are the best at what they do. They want to raise bar for the next batch of leaders. Not only at work but in society.
Great leadership requires a leaders trust. They know what they ask will be completed as required. In order to do this leaders must give the needed training to their employees. They have to listen to and offer the tools employees need to do their jobs more effectively.
Great leaders sit with employees and other leaders to find ways to help them. They do not sit in their corner, glass windowed office and hide. They make themselves visible so people want to interact with them.
Leaders learn the a names of their employees and take interest in their personal lives. They will also thank staff publicly for the great work they do. And all great leaders know that if you need to have a high level talk about performance, do it in private.
Be the Example of Leadership
As the boss do you think people should do what you say but not do what you do? Well, a leader sees things differently and lets their actions be the example people should want to follow.

Will the Leader Stand up
There are two leaders. One is your direct manager and the other your customer. As an employee you do not only work for your company but you work to satisfy all your customers. Without them your business will not be open long.
Leaders help employees see and create an environment that will attract new customers and/or keep current customers happy. When you teach people how to get new customers or satisfy your current customers, you are training employees to one day be in your position. They will apply the same knowledge and techniques. Want to Loss Customers or Employees?
With all the change in the job market it is important more than ever to take care of business. Companies have had to adapt to the new environment and so have employees. If leaders do not adapt then the core values of the company comes in to question.
As leaders of people, we have to prepare employees to do their job better and generate a return on the investment. After all you pay your employees an agreed upon wage and you expect to see their value.
As a leader consider letting people go if they do not perform to their expected results.
Do Not Accept Mediocrity
If you allow mediocrity to join the companies values then you will find it hard to change that in the long run. People will accept and invite mediocrity to work with them. Once your staff has accepted this standard a new leader is needed to shake things ups.
You have heard the saying, ‘Iron Sharpens Iron’, well effective leaders raise effective employees.
Take Your Time In the Hiring Process
This is a hard thing to do. Sometimes as managers we need 100 people to start next week. Profit, market share and our responsibility to investors is at stake. But, if you want a strong team of employees who will be good leaders, then you need to slow down the hiring process.
Remember every time you fire someone soon after hiring them, it costs you, time, money, resources, working hours, it creates havoc in the work environment and damages morale.
Effective managers are ready to conduct as many interviews as it will take to find the right people.
Need To Fire Staff?
Not everyone you hire is going to workout (I have been hired at different jobs and I did not workout. It happens).
As a leader, you need to look for people who are not performing or may have a bad attitude. Keep in mind that their bad attitude may be caused by work stress, harassment or outside of work factors.
Do you best to get your employees help before you have to let them go. You caring for them can change their attitude and turn around their work performance.
Letting employees go is not always easy. As leaders we do develop close relationships with our staff. They begin to feel like our extended family but letting them go needs to be done. Treat the people you are letting go with respect and dignity.
When you hire a qualified person, you are entering in to a contract. As the leader you are saying you will be guide the employee and show them how to be their best and reach their highest potential.
As the employees you agree to complete specific jobs to the best of your ability for a specific amount of pay.
When we hire we need to make sure everyone understands compensation, benefits, work product, hours, company culture, behaviour, company value and community involvement.
Delegate with trust, belief, confidence and a clear direction of the expectations are. Give the work to the people who can complete it. It can also be a good idea to delegate work to people who you feel will grow and learn new skills. Do not give work to people who do not have the skills to complete the job effectively.
You will only set them up for failure and cause them to stress. Give those people other work that is within their skill set.
If employees make mistakes, let them learn and fix what they did wrong. Do not belittle them in front of staff or take away the assignment. Help them, give them the tools and resources they need to succeed.
Meet With Employees Regularly
Set aside time weekly or bi-weekly to meet with an employees. Let them talk and you pay attention to that they are saying. Effective listeners take note and ask questions to understand what their staff is saying.
As an effective listener, you will learn about the person, as well they will give you perspective on what is happening overall at the company.
Leader will find ways to encourage their staff. They may bring in coffee, healthy snacks, allow people go home early and say thank you. Many leaders ask staff what they want for bonus other than money.When they see staff doing the right things they may reward them.
This is similar to what Ivan Pavlov did in his dog experiments to get a desired action or reaction.
It is not alway fun to face people about their negative behaviour but if it is effecting other staff or your bottom line then we need to take action.
What happens when we do not deal with problems? Generally they get worse and then we are also to blame.
Be Firm, Fair and Friendly With Everyone
Being firm means to set clear guidelines on goals, expectations, daily activity, deadlines and budgets. Everyone must know what it means if they do not meet goals and deadlines. Not just to them but to the company.
Being a fair leader is what people expect. Most will not follow you if you are not fair in your treatment of people.
Be friendly but recognize your position and relationship. This does not mean have a big ego, what it mean is we know our responsibility and carry them out.
Regardless if you’re a new manager, supervisor, employee or if you have been in a leadership role for many years, you have the ability to perform better.
To be better you have to first look at yourself and change. Then can you expect your staff or peers to change.
