The Book – The Ant and the Elephant by: Vince Poscente
The Ant and the Elephant was written in 2004. The book has released 13 years ago and is still a great read that helps you understand the relationship between the conscious and subconscious mind.
Representing the conscious mind is the ‘Ant’. Representing the subconscious mind is the ‘Elephant’. There is a wise ‘Owl’ in the book, which I believe represents all the knowledge we gain from book, audio programming, mentorship and self-talk. The Owl is a mentor or life coach.
The reason the conscious mind is represented by the ant is because a small percentage of our daily chit chatter and self-talk controls our subconscious.
What we do, how we act, react, think, try, fear and determines how we ultimately succeed.
The story represents the thoughts everyone has during their day. The positive and the negative, along with thoughts of giving up or going for your dream.
Friends, family or co-workers who take our focus off our goals are also represented. The book talks about your thoughts and how they guide you on your journey. The story shows how your words can cause you to procrastinate.
What Is The Conscious Mind?
The conscious mind is the part of the mind you are aware of and can control with your words. It is your thoughts and it is what you are doing now. It is what allow you to feel in control.
You think, “Scroll up and click on the above link” and your brain does the work to get your hands to click on the link.
The conscious mind is what you use to, “program yourself.”
You want to get up at 6am? You tell yourself you want to get up so you set the alarm. In the morning your alarm goes off. Now what?
Your subconscious mind takes over.
What Is The Subconscious Mind?
Your subconscious mind is programmed by your conscious mind. So your conscious mind writes the program your brain, body, soul and spirit obey.
Your subconscious mind will do what you want to do. Here is the catch, you have to train your subconscious mind to do what you want it to do until the action becomes a habit.
When you alarm goes off at 6am do you hit the snooze and go back to bed or do you turn of the alarm and get out of bed?
Your subconscious mind wants you to rest and hit the snooze. Your conscious mind wants to get out of bed and turn off the alarm. Who will win this morning battle?
You are in control so you get to decide. The more times you turn of the alarm and get out of bed, the more you program your subconscious mind to make it a habit. The more times you hit the snooze you also program your subconscious mind.
If you read the statement Mahatma Gandhi said, you understand the power of using words and thoughts to create the life you want.
The statement goes something like this, Your beliefs become your thoughts. Then positive or negative thoughts become your words. Those words you speak you take actions on. The actions you take becomes your daily habits. The habits you develop become the values you live by. Those values you live by determine the destiny you will have.
Have A Reason To Change
The book shows the connection between the conscious and subconscious part of the brain. It tells you how to program the mind, so you can succeed in any way you want.
Let’s admit it, most of us are happy with where we are in life. There is a percentage of people who want to live a better life than we are currently living.
We all want peace of mind and the ability to put our head on the pillow each evening and know what we did today mattered.
If you are happy with the life you are living, this article may give you some additional insight on how to improve your life. If you are not happy with where you are, then the goal of this article is to give you the tools to change the way you think.
Do you want to change? What you do differently from this moment forward will determine your success or failure. A few years ago I came across the book, The Slight Edge. I believe it can help you understand the impact each decision, you make, has towards your future.
Anyone looking to change, relate, create or succeed in any facet of life needs to understand ego. We all need to do our best, to not have ego impact our conscious or subconscious thoughts and actions.
Listen to your inner voice. You know the one that is telling you what you need to do to succeed in life. Do not listen to the inner voice that want to hurt, destroy and bring you down.
What Will You Do?
Do you want to change the way you think? You may have to change the programmer, first. This means everything you have done up until today has given you the results you have.
If you want different results then you should take different actions from what you have done.
How do you take action? For starters you need to be conscious of how you talk to yourself. Are you using positive or negative words. Do you tell yourself you can succeed or you will fail? What ever you tell yourself, that is where your thoughts will take you.
If you say I want to be a millionaire then your mind will start to take action towards that path. If you say I can’t afford to buy that, well then your mind will find excuses on why you can’t afford that.
Simply saying I want to be a millionaire will not make you a millionaire. You need to back it up by action. What kind of action? That’s a great question.
In order for you to do and be anything, you need to have a vision of where you want to be or what you want to do.
Sit down and decide what you want to do. What makes you come alive? What one thing can you not live with out? Imagine all the possibilities of your life if you could not fail in the attempt to achieving your dreams.
Brainstorm and write your idea. If you have to sit with a friends, family or a mentor to help you figure this out then do so. This is your life. Plan it.
Did you know more people plan a one week vacation and never their own life?
Now that you have a vision. It is time to think right. When you think right, you speak right. When you speak positively, you use your conscious mind to program your subconscious mind. The goal is to take the right actions to see your vision through to the end.
In order to speak positive you have to first notice when and where you speak negative. The negative you speak is also programming your thoughts and creating the life you have. Choose your words wisely.
Everything that is not taking you to your vision you will need to review the importance of it. Why is it important to you? What could be important to you based on your vision?
When was the last time you did something just one time and became an expert? My guess is that it has not ever happen. Just like you do not become an expert doing something once, you do not program your subconscious by thinking a thought once.
Science tells us that we think the same thought 1000’s of time a day. Have you ever reviewed the thoughts your thinking? Those thoughts are what makes you who you are today.
Want to change? Then change your thoughts. You want to lose weight? Then you have to tell yourself that eating that fatty donut will not get you to your goal. Each time you think about the donut, you must tell yourself that statement.
You are using the power or your self-talk to reprogram yourself. The key is to repeat the steps, words and actions over and over until they are a subconscious habit.
Do you believe in yourself? I sure hope you do because you will face challenges. How you react and overcome those challenges will determine your future success. It can be easy to give up at the first sign of a challenge. The trick is what do you say, think or believe about yourself?
If you get frustrated then you get negative. If you are negative then you fall into old patterns. The longer you stay their, the longer you take to reach your vision or goals.
Realize quickly that fear is not real. Fear is, False Evidence Appearing Real.
When you are feeling down, and it will happen, will you pick up a book, listen to an audio or talk to a mentor and get back on track?
If you can prepare for any unforeseen circumstances then you have a better change to succeed. You have to anticipate what may or may not happen on your journey to our goal.
You will need to plan how you will deal with those things that may or may not come up.
Lets say you want to finish an important document to take to the office on Monday morning. Its Saturday night and your friends call you. What do you say and what will you do?
Whatever answer you choose, know that the document you want to work on will be completed with excellence or it till not be.
It is nice to go out but you have to pick and choose the time that work best for you. You can not let others dictate your schedule. You are in charge of your destiny.
The Ant and the Elephant, coupled with some self-talk books, will put you on the path to mastering your subconscious mind. Use the power of your conscious mind and guide yourself to the life you want through positive words and actions. Use the buzz of excitement you create to change your life.
